Going to see a urologist might seem like a big deal, but when it’s time, it’s time. Don’t delay, do not pass go, do not collect … well, you know the rest.
In all seriousness, there are some clear red flags that it’s time to see a urologist and here they are.
Urinating Frequently And Leaking Urine
These can represent signs of an overactive bladder or incontinence, and a urologist can treat this condition in both men and women. Lifestyle modifications, medications, and other treatments can help to improve your symptoms. Symptoms left untreated can sometimes cause long term damage to the bladder and kidneys, and can leave you with less options than if caught early.
You Suspect A Kidney Stone
The telltale signs of a kidney stone include the following:
- Severe pain in the lower back on one side or the other
- Blood in the urine
- Foul smelling and cloudy urine
Don’t delay in seeking medical care if you have any of these symptoms, particularly if fever is present, as this can represent a true emergency.
You Have A Urinary Tract Infection That Won’t Go Away
A UTI is nothing to take lightly. If you have consistent burning pain while urinating and frequent urges to go, this is most likely a UTI. Antibiotics normally resolve this condition, but if the symptoms do not go away, seek medical assistance from a board-certified Urologist.
It could be a persistent bacteria, or even non bacterial causes such as interstitial cystitis, a chronic painful bladder condition. A variety of treatments and preventatives, both with or without the use of antibiotics can help alleviate these bothersome issues.
Erectile Dysfunction
Men who have trouble getting and maintaining an erection should see a urologist for a consultation to determine the cause. These can range from physical issues, psychological sources, or even some medicines. Erectile dysfunction can even be the first sign of bigger problems, such as heart disease, so evaluation and screening can be very helpful and effective.
For Men
Additional symptoms that should cause a man to seek the care of a urologist include the following:
- Elevated PSA – which could represent the first signs of prostate cancer
- A mass or pain in the testicles – which could represent issues such as twisting of the testicles, testicular cancers, or testicular infections
- An enlarged prostate
- Fertility issues
Our practices offers a variety of ways to treat and evaluate a number of issues that you may be experiencing, so please never hesitate to reach out.
